Camden have launched their latest ‘Know You’re Not Alone’ campaign to tackle domestic violence and abuse in Camden with a powerful new video:

The video’s message is that domestic abuse can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation or culture. The Council has worked with partner organisations and community groups to show the diversity of what abusive behaviour can look like, and where to go for help.

Kilburn's Own Raving Loony

Theatre Review
by Nathan Williams

Kilburn has many famous alumni from the worlds of music and sport - but perhaps you didn't know that one of the towering greats of 20th Century British politics was born here. I'm talking about a man who founded his own political party and still holds the record for the longest serving party leader in UK politics. This is none other than Screaming Lord Sutch - founder of the Monster Raving Loony party.

He grew up in Kilburn (on Charteris Road I believe) but went on to stand for parliament all over the country in more than 40 elections - of course losing all of them. Whether you consider his political career a glorious triumph or humiliating failure is one of many questions posed by a new production at the Soho Theatre: Monster Raving Loony.

The play is written by James Graham (@mrJamesGraham) who wrote the superb This House at the National Theatre. This play is similar in making politics accessible but very different in its presentation. As you might expect from its subject, this portrait of Lord Sutch is bonkers and brilliant. Like Sutch it's very silly but with a serious point buried underneath -  it's joyful but also a bit sad.

His life is not portrayed in standard biographic fashion. Rather it is told through an astonishing range of comic scenes representing every British comedy act you can think of. One minute you're watching panto- then Carry On - Monty Python - Blackadder - 2 Ronnies and so on. So you get two plays in one: a biography of Sutch and an encyclopedia of 20th century comedy. Arguably Lord Sutch spent most of his life playing a comic version of himself which makes the presentation very apt. With a few exceptions the sketches link very cleverly to his life, so although deliberately disjointed the play makes a satisfying whole. There's brilliant use of the audience and an amazing multi-talented multi-role cast.

This is a must see if you have any interest in comedy and/or politics.
On at the Soho Theatre until Sat 18th June.

Tricycle Young Company presents Switch

The Tricycle Theatre has announced the return of the Tricycle’s 19-25yr old  Young Company’s Switch for a further four performances in June. This will be the final Tricycle Young Company performance in the building before the Tricycle Theatre closes temporarily for a period of Capital renovations from July 2016.

The original production debuted in scratch form in March 2016 as part of the Tricycle’s annual young person’s event, Takeover 2016: Paradise. After enjoying a series of sell-out performances, Tricycle Young Company are back with a re-vamped version of their exciting site-specific production that involves audiences on a mission across the whole of the Tricycle.

If you had the chance to plug into a machine that would take you straight to Heaven, would YOU flick the Switch?

The immersive promenade performance takes place throughout the theatre with audiences recast as citizens of a broken future. The performance uses the whole of the Tricycle building as its stage, including some areas rarely open to the public.

Creative Learning Director Liam Shea: “Switch is a fresh original piece of theatre devised by the Tricycle Young Company that draws the audience into the narrative of a future that is at times scarily close to being reality. The audience get to set their own roles and they get to choose the direction of the drama. I can’t think of a better way to round off a fantastic year of our inventive, creative learning programme than with a second chance to participate in this great fun show.”

Performances: 19 June 5.00pm, 7.30pm & 26 June 1.00pm, 3.30pm

Director: Tom Bowtell, Designer: Caroline Jones, Lighting Designer: Sarah-Louise McColgan

The 2016 London Rose Emma Murphy-O'Connor, with the London Rose Centre, will host a fashion show fundraiser on the 1st of July. The event will be held in the Claddagh Ring, Hendon. The funds raised at the fashion show will be donated to the London Irish Centre and the Grace O'Shea Foundation

The clothes and accessories that will be displayed on the night will be from Serenity & Grace. Serenity & Grace is an online store, run by Ann Marie McDonagh, which provides everything you need for any special occasion from dresses to hat and even hair and make-up services. The outfits will be mainly from her Irish designer section and will be modeled by former London Roses and finalists. We are also delighted to have Ian McDonnell from Irish TV to present the night. At the interval of the show we will be giving attendees the chance to win some fantastic prizes with our exciting raffle and auction. We also invite gentlemen to attend as there will be fun and entertainment on the night to tickle their fancy.

Emma Murphy-O'Connor, 2016 London Rose, said; "As the Rose of Tralee is about celebrating and supporting the Irish diaspora, we have organised a fundraiser in support of two wonderful causes. The London Irish Centre has been the heartbeat of the Irish here in London, making us all feel part of a community away from home and as such we would love to give some support back to them in order to help keep the fabulous centre up and running. Ann Marie McDonagh set up the gorgeous Serenity & Grace website to not only help us to feel good on the inside and out but also to support the foundation set up for NF2 disorder of the nervous system in the name of her lovely sister Grace O'Shea. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible down in the Claddagh Ring for a night of fun, fashion and fundraising."

About the London Irish Centre:
The London Irish Centre (LIC) is the heart of the Irish community in London. The LIC is both a Registered Charity and an Irish community centre in Camden Square, London NW1. For sixty years, The LIC has been both supporting Irish people in London and promoting Irish arts and culture. Their welfare service is the largest for Irish people outside of Ireland. Each year they work with thousands of people to improve their housing, income, access to health, and social inclusion opportunities. This service works to meet the diverse needs of the large Irish community in London.
About the Grace O'Shea Foundation:
The foundation was set up to raise funds to support the treatment and care of Grace O'Shea, sister of London Rose sponsor and Serenity & Grace owner, Ann Marie McDonagh. Grace suffers from an extremely rare illness called Neurofibromatosis type 2.Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a hereditary condition most commonly associated with bilateral vestibular schwannomas, also known as acoustic neuromas. These are benign (noncancerous) tumors that occur on the nerves for balance leading to the inner ear. Although these tumors are benign, they can cause hearing and balance problems. People with NF2 also have an increased risk of other tumors of the nervous system. These tumors are generally not cancerous, but they may still lead to significant medical problems, especially if there are multiple tumors in or next to the brain.

Tickets are £7.00 and can be purchased from the venue or contact the London Rose centre at sineadkal@gmail.com.

On Fathers Day, Edgware Town Ladies competed in their second tournament in the 5 a side at Enfield.

Four narrow defeats saw the team eliminated at the group stages, but the spirit and never say die attitude was evident through all the games, with everyone involved doing their bit and often playing in positions not familiar to them. The performances got better and better and all that was missing were some points on the board.
Manager Chris Walker was full of praise of his team " In warm conditions, the team displayed again the commitment and determination to which we have seen since the team was formed.  This  tournament saw us play better than our first one, and we will keep learning from each experience and continue to progress"
The ladies team are continuing their preparations ahead of the coming season and are looking for players.

Pre-season training starts Friday 1st July 7.30-9pm at Edgware Town FC, Silver Jubilee Park, Townsend Lane, Kingsbury, NW9 7NE

Letter to the Editor from Irish Remain supporter

The result of the UK referendum could change the face of Europe forever. Neither side in the referendum campaign has covered itself in glory; voters cannot believe the economic and counter-economic claims. Neither are they convinced by the scientific, environmental, education and cultural claims made by either side. Fear of immigration dominates.

BREXIT will scar the Irish landscape, dividing it with the physical barriers of an international border; wire fences, passport control, customs posts, even on quiet country roads. The disruption to human and commercial traffic would be immeasurable, and the psychological damage to the Irish spirit worse than at the height of the Troubles.

Ireland was transformed by its membership of the EU. There have been downsides, but that membership has been the making of the wonderful, progressive state which is Ireland. Europe needs Britain, and Britain needs Europe, if it did but know it. For peace, for prosperity in the Single Market, for the joy of freedom of movement for work, for education and for living, tell your friends and colleagues just to get over themselves and vote Remain.

Rigby Graham Comes to Sylvester Fine Art

“Prolific landscape painter, printmaker and designer who represented man-made and natural beauty with striking directness”
Christopher Masters, Guardian 01 June 2015

Saturday 9 July marks the opening day of the latest show at Sylvester Fine Art; the art of Rigby Graham.  Principally a topographic artist, Rigby Graham was born in Stretford in 1931.  His work is influenced by Neo-Romantics but in his colour he owes much to German Expressionism and he is considered one of the most important landscape painters of the late 20th century.

Despite the romantic influences, Graham’s work was not “romantic” in the conventional sense, he would often include anachronistic details in his landscapes which work to subvert the viewer’s expectations.

Graham worked in a variety of media, though his favourite was watercolour and it is in that genre that he was at his most compelling.  A fine draughtsman and a relentless traveller, he always sat down in front of the scene he was depicting whatever the weather.

In addition to the inspiration of 19th-century greats such as Turner, Gainsborough and Cotman, Graham also acknowledged the influence of older contemporaries such as Paul Nash, John Piper and Graham Sutherland, who adapted that tradition for the 20th century.

The archive of his work, now at Manchester Metropolitan University, is a central resource for the study of landscape painting, lithographic and wood-cut printing, book illustration and production and private presses.

Examples of his work in all media will be available to view and purchase in the exhibition including some wonderful stained glass windows, woodcuts, watercolours, oils, linocuts and drawings.

Rigby died in May 2015 after a long illness.

An East London based civil engineering contractor with over 30 years in business has been awarded one of the most prestigious Irish community awards in the UK.

Brendan Riney MBE has been named as the winner of the respected Kerry Association London Person of the Year award for 2016.

The South Kerry native was selected last night by the Kerry Association London’s Person of the Year sub-committee in recognition for the charity work he undertakes in the London area.

Mr Riney is the Managing Director of J B Riney & Co Ltd, a renowned civil engineering contractor which has become one of London’s leading and most respected construction companies.

He joins some of London’s most illustrious Kerry people, like the late John Murphy and current KAL chairman Danny O’Sullivan who have employed countless Kerry people in their respective civil engineering firms over the years, as Kerry Person of the Year.

In October 2012, Mr Riney was presented with the Member of the most excellent order of the British Empire award from Prince Charles to honour his work setting up Mudchute City Farm, in Pier Street on the Isle of Dogs.

On hearing of her award he said: “This is a tremendous honour and I am very pleased to be the 2016 Kerry Person of the Year. I am very proud of my Kerry background especially my roots in Kenmare. I will do my best in my role as Kerry Person and very much look forward to an exciting year ahead.”

Mr Riney, who travelled to London in 1947, left his native Kenmare at the young age of 13. His father was born and raised in Templenoe and his mother was from Cork.
He will be joined by his wife Anne, his daughters and son at the Annual Kerry Association Dinner & Dance on the 21st of October to accept his award.

The following night, on the 22nd of October, Kerry Association chairman Danny O’Sullivan will host his annual charity fundraiser in aid of St Joseph’s nursing home in Killorglin at the parish church hall in Dollis Hill, North London.

The Annual Kerry Association London Dinner & Dance will be held on the 21st of October at the Clayton Crown hotel, Cricklewood. For enquiries regarding the event, please contact Kerry Association Secretary, Tara Cronin, on +44 7939 017022.

Kilburn Cosmos Burglary

LUCOZADE LOOTER BREAKS IN TO BRENT’S ONLY RUGBY CLUB

While Team GB are still celebrating winning silver in the Olympic rugby sevens in Rio, Brent’s only rugby club Kilburn Cosmos, are lamenting a big loss after their clubhouse in Gladstone Park was broken into and money raised for sports equipment stolen.

CCTV footage shows a young man, approximately 5’10” tall and weighing around 230lbs, breaking and entering through a window around midnight on Sunday 7th August, before emptying both the till and the safe before rewarding himself with an orange flavoured Lucozade. Taken away to be dusted for fingerprints, the police are hopeful that they will catch the burglar if he is in the system, but it is unlikely the club will ever be able to recover their loss from the crime.

Club Chairman James Birrell says “Rugby is an inclusive sport, and we as a club have been welcoming men, women and children to play and train with us for the last twenty years. We want to be able to continue to support local players to keep fit and improve their skills, but this is a massive loss for us and will be difficult to recoup the funds. Thankfully, rugby teaches you that when you get knocked back you’ve got to get straight back up again – so we are holding a day of festivities including a bake sale, raffle and rugby activities in Gladstone Park, and we have set up a Just Giving page too. We're also on the lookout for sponsors for the club to ensure we're around for the long-term, and to partner with local businesses. We're really hoping the community can rally around us as they have done for years”.

The club are turning their annual Brownes Cup day held on the 3rd of September 2016 into a fundraising day – with rugby games to watch, a barbecue, bake sale and raffles with prizes donated from local businesses. The festivities kick off at 11am on the main pitch in Gladstone Park where Austral and Kendal roads meet, and the day is open to anyone and everyone, whether they know how to play rugby or not. Potential sponsors are also encouraged to come down to see how the club operates and to meet the players.

For those unable to attend, Kilburn Cosmos have also created a Just Giving page, hoping to raise £3,000 – the total amount of funds they need to afford sports equipment for the players.

Kilburn Cosmos are always looking for new recruits, and as an inclusive club, training is open to all ages and abilities, especially to those who have never played before and want to learn a new skill. All training is held in Gladstone Park, with men’s session’s every Thursday 7pm and Saturday 10.30am, women’s every Tuesday at 7pm and Sunday 12.30pm, and juniors (all ages) on Sundays from 10am.

Anyone with any information about the crime should contact Crimestoppers or Wembley Police. Local businesses interested in sponsorship opportunities can contactinfo@kilburncosmos.co.uk.

Those wishing to contribute directly towards the club’s sports equipment fund can visit www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/KilburnCosmos

Camden Fringe 2016 @ Proud Camden – Cabaret Room
Mon 22nd and Tues 23rd August 8pm doors £10 tix both days.

Huw Josephis a multi faceted performer born in the UK, raised in Melbourne that now resides permanently in London. A comedic singer-song writer, professional radio DJ, club DJ and occasional actor / TV presenter, he has performed over 1000 times publicly on stages varying from 15 people to 15,000 and he can hold down either effortlessly.

“Huw Joseph is a name that is becoming increasingly eminent and synonymous with eclectic comedy music on the local and international arts scene". Beat Magazine.

Coming directly from commercial breakfast radio for Australia’s largest media outlet Southern Cross Austereo Huw landed a job on air very quickly in London hosting 2 weekly shows on UK’s uncensored digital giant Fubar Radio. He’s been on air at Fubar for 18 months now 1 show is with UK actor/comedian/rapper Dow Brown and the other with UK rapper/entrepreneur Mikill Pane www.fubarradio.com for details.

His one true passion above all else is his original music and full line up known as Huw Joseph and the Immoral Support Band. Inspired by the likes of Frank Zappa, Tim Minchin, Flight of the Conchords, Ween, Tenacious D, Kings of Leon, Jeff Buckley this is not traditional musical comedy, this is musicality meets irreverent lyrics. You can expect on stage antics, guest actors and some wonderfully constructed melodic pop rock with cheeky lyrical content. It’s very funny!

After it’s inception in Australia 7 years ago Huw has since toured several times around Aus and the UK (2009, 2012) performed at dozens of festivals incl Edinburgh Fringe, Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival plus literally hundreds of venues. He has built a strong underground following including 10k social media followers and 100k views on YouTube.

Huw Joseph and the Immoral Support Band MICF 2015 review.
“While the show includes several stand-up skits that all merit a laugh, it is the songs that are the highlight especially Wambulance about a “upper class girl” which has a deeper, hilarious hidden meaning. The band is extremely tight you can tell they have a lot of musical experience – keep an eye on these guys!”        Herald Sun

With his debut single WAMBULANCE (a story of 1st world problems) finished and ready to hear - https://soundcloud.com/huwjoseph/wambulance already clocking up 5k listens on SoundCloud, his brand new UK line up band has been touring to gather ground swell to release the single later this year and they could not be more excited to be joining the illustrious Camden Fringe for 2016 at the wonderful Proud Gallery. The Clitterhouse Farm Project will be hosting Cricklewoods first Arts and Crafts festival  to promote the artistic talents of North West London.
They have a growing line up of musicians,  spoken word artists, dancers, visual artists, and workshops, and would welcome more participants - particularly, but not only, visual artists.

This will be a one day pop-up event, mostly outdoors, though some shelter will be available. It will be a great opportunity to show work in an unconventional setting.

For more info email  Paulette - paulette@clitterhouse.com

Please come, create and make this an Arts Festival that helps put Cricklewood on the Arts map of London.

Henri Matisse Original Prints at Sylvester Fine Arts

Henri Matisse Original Prints
Sylvester Fine Art is delighted to present an exhibition of rare and original prints by Henri Matisse from 17 September through 16 October 2016.

Although widely known as a painter, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was also involved with printmaking for over fifty years. From 1900 to the time of his death in 1954, he created more than 800 prints, including etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, linocuts, and monotypes. These prints were often executed on a small scale with great linear fluidity and were largely a focus of Matisse’s creativity in his later years. Matisse found printmaking to be a personal and intimate process, one which he often used as a means of unwinding after long and intense periods of painting. Considered a master of calligraphic pattern, it is easy to see why Matisse is now widely recognised as one of the greatest printmakers of the twentieth century.
The exhibition will include prints from his rare and supremely elegant Dessinsseries (1943), a suite of simplified female figures and still lifes, the series Visages (1946), variations of the graceful face of his model Annelies Nelck, and the now rare suite of lithographs, Florilège des Amours de Ronsard (1948), in which Matisse illustrated the love poems of the 16thcentury poet Pierre de Ronsard.
Sylvester Fine Art will also present Matisse’s exhibition posters from 1967-1982 and Jazz & Circus lithographic prints, in which he “[teaches] the eye to hear,” acting as a visual counterpart of jazz music and depicting scenes of performing artists and balancing acts from the circus. A selection of original lithographs – created in a process which Matisse personally directed and supervised – from the popular Last Works(1950-1954), his highly innovative brightly coloured gouache paper cut-outs, will also be available.

DETAILS of the 2017 Rose of Tralee International Festival from 16-22 August have been announced and one thing is certain, the next London Rose will be there.

Rose of Tralee Maggie McEldowney has returned to her native windy city of Chicago after launching the search for her successor following a brief tour of counties in Ulster and Leinster.
65 Roses from Ireland and Irish communities around the globe will travel to Kerry for the seven-day festival while the 2017 Rose of Tralee will be crowned live on RTÉ on Tuesday 22nd August.
Whoever is picked as their 2017 county, city, state or national Rose will travel to Tralee in August to enjoy everything that Ireland’s flagship family festival has to offer – parades, gala functions, entertainment, televised Rose selection nights, a Rose Tour and much more.
Emma Murphy-O’Connor, 2016 London Rose had this to say about her experience: “As a little girl, watching the Rose of Tralee was always a feature of our summer holidays and something I had always wanted to do. Getting around to filling out the application for the London selection was the best decision I have made.
I have been welcomed and become involved in the London Irish community, heading to Dublin for a tour to places and events you might never get the opportunity to otherwise, the excitement and involvement of my family and friends, trips to Frankfurt for the Christmas markets, New York for St Patrick's Day and most importantly meeting 130 incredible roses and escorts from around the world along with all the amazing people that put so much into making you feel like a special makes this just so much more than two weeks of fun and excitement at the festival in Tralee.
This has been a year of making memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. I can't recommend it enough!”
The London Rose Selection will take place on the 12thof May at the Clayton Crown Hotel, Cricklewood. If you are interested in entering the London Rose of Tralee event you can do so online at www.roseoftralee.ie.
As the Lead Sponsor of the Rose of International Festival, Tipperary Crystal will present, the 2017 Rose of Tralee with a complete collection of Tipperary Crystal Fine Jewellery, a range of high quality products from their Giftware and Homeware Collections. She’ll wear the splendid new featuring the Rose motif as the central framework, adorned in glistening crystals and the exquisitely crafted Crystal Perpetual Trophy.
The next Rose of Tralee will drive away from Tralee in a brand new KIA from McElligotts Tralee, a World Travel Prize valued at €25,000, a weeklong holiday in Kerry from Kerry County Council, a tablet complete with a year’s subscription to Independent.ie, and a bouquet from flowers.ie while Sean Taaffe Group will look after all the hair styling needs of the 2017 Rose of Tralee.
Every return visit to Tralee during the 2017 Rose of Tralee’s reign will be spent in comfort at the magnificent 4-star Rose Hotel, the home to the Rose of Tralee International Festival.
